Dubbed the Diamond City, Wilkes-Barre owes its early prosperity to the coal mining industry. With the ebbing of the coal industry in the mid-20th century and the harrowing arrival of Hurricane Agnes in 1972, Wilkes-Barre has faced its share of adversity. But the Wyoming Valley city rebuilt and bounced back, and is now a thriving commercial center with plenty to offer in the way of arts, history and recreation. Theater and music come alive at the F. M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, home of the Northeastern Philharmonic Orchestra and Ballet Theatre Pennsylvania. Visitors interested in learning about the area's cultural and industrial history appreciate the comprehensive exhibits on display at the Luzerne County Historical Society Museum. Ricketts Glen State Park, a short drive west of the city, presents a number of recreational activities and a landscape ornamented with several waterfalls.
